Where would Batman be without the Batmobile? Where would the Doctor be without his TARDIS? Where would Captain Kirk be without the Enterprise? Captain Nemo without the Nautilus? Gandalf without Shadowfax? Where would Optimus Prime be without… um… would Optimus Prime be?

Heroes and villains are great, but part of what makes them cool is their propensity for getting where they’re going in style. Imperator Furiosa was badass on foot, but commanding the War Rig took her to another level. Sure Wonder Woman can fly now, but who doesn’t still love her Invisible Plane? And what good is Speed Racer without the Mach 5?

These great modes of transport have carried us from the far corners of the earth, to the depths of the sea, to the far reaches of space and beyond. Decades of books, movies, comics, and animation have given us countless amazing options that, at the end of the day, are way cooler than taking the bus. (Unless, of course, you’re taking Catbus.)

Who hasn’t been caught in traffic and wanted some of the gadgetry of Bond’s Astin Martin DB5 at their disposal? Or fantasized about serving aboard the HMS Nike, Battlestar Galactica, or USS Enterprise? We are still waiting for our flying cars, but some of us would settle for Marty McFly’s hoverboard.
