Currently Seeking Sensitivity Readers

CONvergence strives to create an inclusive environment that is respectful of all cultures and identities. We are aware that the theme of Mythology and Legends for CONvergence 2020 could lead to disrespect of cultures and propagation of stereotypes. To address that, we are currently recruiting Sensitivity Readers to assist CONvergence in actively avoiding cultural appropriation and hurtful stereotypes.

Sensitivity Readers will work with the CONvergence Programming department to review proposed panel titles and descriptions, and to recruit and vet potential panelists. They will also review materials for the souvenir guide and may work with other departments upon request.

Those who volunteer for this task will be considered Specialists in the Programming department, and will therefore be members of the Convention Committee. This is an excellent opportunity to engage in convention planning throughout the year and shape the convention’s programming content, not to mention clock some volunteer hours before the convention.

Applicants with strong knowledge of cultural sensitivity regarding marginalized cultures, best practices, and experience—including both professional experience and lived experience—in providing guidance around these topics are preferred. If you would like to be considered, please contact Margaret Eastman, Director of Activities, at activities@convergenceevents.org. If you have friends who may be interested, please encourage them to get in touch!
